NEW MODELS TO STUDY TISSUE HOMEOSTASIS AND TUMORIGENESIS
Understanding of mammalian biology at the tissue level and studying organ development and how they change during disease state in humans has been difficult due to ethical concerns and inaccessibility of sample. Conventional monolayer cell cultures, derived from human tissue have been used for decades to create experimental tools to study basic and cancer biology.

Center for Stem Cell & Organoid Medicine (CuSTOM) – Human ips
This confocal microscopic image shows a tiny bioengineered human liver organoid grown in the lab with pluripotent stem cells. The mini-organ is accumulating inflammation and fat lipids (bluish bubble-like shapes), which are hallmarks of fatty liver and Wolman disease. The ability to closely mimic naturally occurring human liver disease in a research laboratory allowed researchers in the U.S. and Japan to determine underlying disease biology and search for much-needed new treatments, they report in Cell Metabolism.
